Warning: Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi himself, doesn’t want you to watch this trailer.
I just wanted you to be aware that the person who made this movie thinks you might enjoy it more if you do not watch and overanalyze this trailer. (Just kidding, but only kind of.) We now return to your regular programming of overanalyzing this trailer.
Watching the start of the Mitchell Trubisky era in Chicago is few people’s idea of a good time, but fans who dutifully tuned into the Bears-Vikings matchup on Monday Night Football (it was 3-2 at halftime, by the way) were rewarded with the second trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Though the first teaser released in April was light on plot, Lucasfilm now appears willing to risk it all, filling the new trailer with some highly suggestive, though perhaps misleading, shots.
There’s a look at Supreme Leader Snoke sans hologram, who’s potentially torturing our (last?) Jedi, Rey:

There’s a space battle between Kylo Ren’s forces and a ship carrying his mother, General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher, RIP), and the trailer truly twists the knife, cutting to black just as it appears that Ren is about to blow Leia to smithereens.

And most tempting of all, there’s a scene in which Rey speaks to Kylo Ren and possibly aligns with him. “I need someone to show me my place in all this,” she says, as we see him extend his hand.

What does this mean for Kylo Ren? Is there good in him after all?
As for Rey, between that parting image and Luke Skywalker’s ominous interpretation of her growing powers—“I’ve seen this raw strength only once before. It didn’t scare me enough then. It does now.”—it’s clear that Rey’s path to becoming a Jedi will not be simple or easy. Shades of Anakin, perhaps? OK, forget I said that—I’m sorry I brought it up. The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
