Continuing the rush of awards season, the Screen Actors Guild announced its nominees for next year’s SAG Awards on Wednesday, recognizing the best on-screen performances in TV and film. The SAG Awards are typically a good predictor of which actors the Oscars will recognize. Of the 2017 winners—Emma Stone for best actress, Denzel Washington for best actor, Viola Davis for supporting actress, and Mahershala Ali for supporting actor—only Washington wouldn’t go on to win his respective category at the Oscars, losing to Casey Affleck.
The nominees, presented by Niecy Nash and Olivia Munn—who, quick aside, were absolutely hilarious, and a breath of fresh air in comparison to the rest of these mundane announcements—were good news for two Oscar hopefuls: Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Both films were nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture alongside The Big Sick, Get Out, and Mudbound. Plus, Lady Bird’s Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf were nominated for best actress and supporting actress, respectively, while Three Billboards earned Frances McDormand (best actress) as well as Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson (both for supporting actor) nods. Obviously, we’re just dealing with acting categories here, but awards season has, thus far, shown these films considerable love.
Meanwhile, the actors of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread were shut out entirely. While this shouldn’t spell huge trouble for Daniel Day-Lewis earning a best actor nomination at the Oscars—he’s Daniel Day-Lewis, and this is supposedly his final film—he does lose momentum to the likes of Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name) and Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour), two early front-runners.
SAG’s TV nominations weren’t particularly surprising: HBO’s Big Little Lies saw four actors (Alexander Skarsgard, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Laura Dern) earn nominations, tied among shows with Stranger Things. Netflix’s hugely popular series got two group nominations—Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series—while David Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown received individual nominations. They will likely celebrate with Eggo waffles.
