More Ryan Reynolds antics await as the May 18 sequel finally yields a proper preview

The Deadpool sequel has a trailer! I mean, an actual trailer. Not Ryan Reynolds cosplaying as Bob Ross for two minutes or Ryan Reynolds playing with a Deadpool toy set and going a little hard-R with the action figures—I’m talking about a two-and-a-half-minute trailer that from start to finish has scenes from Deadpool 2 and provides some semblance of a plot.

Rest assured, the fourth-wall breaks and crass humor are still there—at one point the screen  flashes the following message, and I have to admit I chortled:

But peel away Deadpool 2’s self-aware veneer and you have the makings of a conventional action story. Cable (Josh Brolin), a menacing figure with a bionic arm, has come from the future to our present in order to kill a kid with mutant powers, for some reason, Terminator-style. Deadpool’s gonna stop him, or whatever, and gather a group of mutants and do what all action movies do: put together a team. Per the comics, it’s gonna be the X-Force.

Meanwhile, if you read the plot synopsis provided by 20th Century Fox on YouTube, Deadpool 2 is about how “a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor — finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.” That is … honestly, I’d like to see that movie.

Nevertheless, this is still a Deadpool movie—we’re going to get a profane, subversive take on superheroes, and the trailer has plenty of moments that live up to that promise. Deadpool shooting baddies in high heels at a strip club? Check. Spinning around in Professor X’s wheelchair? Check. Talking about gathering mutants who have franchise potential? Check. Bursting out of a coffin and killing folks at a funeral? Also check.

Deadpool 2, you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention. I’ll see you opening night, May 18.
