Police in Overland Park, Kansas, are investigating a battery incident involving a juvenile at the home of Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill, according to a report obtained by The Kansas City Star. A source told the Star that Hill’s 3-year-old son was the juvenile involved in the incident, and that he suffered a broken arm.
According to the report, Overland Park police were called to Hill’s home at 4:20 p.m. on Thursday. Police had also visited Hill’s home on March 5 to investigate a call reporting child abuse or neglect, but that police report was closed three days later when authorities declined to prosecute, according to KCTV. Hill’s name is not listed on the most recent report. His fiancée, Crystal Espinal, is listed under “others involved.” A source told the Star that Espinal “has been in contact” with the police department about the incident.
As of early Friday evening, Hill had not been charged with a crime.
In a statement to the Star, the Chiefs said that the “club is aware of the investigation involving Tyreek Hill.”
“We’re in the process of gathering information and have been in contact with the league and local authorities. We’ll have no further comment at this time,” the statement said.
Hill was dismissed from Oklahoma State’s football team in December 2014 when he was arrested and charged with domestic assault and battery by strangulation after Espinal told police he choked her and punched her in the face and stomach. Espinal was pregnant at the time. Hill pleaded guilty to those charges in August 2015 and received three years of probation, a 52-week batterer’s intervention program, and fines, according to The Oklahoman. He transferred to West Alabama for a year before entering the NFL draft in 2016, when the Chiefs selected him in the fifth round. In August 2018, Hill’s case was dismissed and expunged, and his guilty plea was changed to a not-guilty plea. At the Pro Bowl in late January, Hill’s fiancée told the Star that she was pregnant with twins.
The news comes on the same day that former Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt was suspended for eight games following an NFL investigation into multiple reports of violence. The Chiefs released Hunt in November on the same day TMZ published a video showing Hunt kicking and shoving a woman in a Cleveland hotel in February 2018.
Hill is entering the final year of his contract with Kansas City. Earlier this month, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Chiefs had started negotiations with Hill on a potentially record-setting contract extension.
