Analysis
By Michael PinaPreseason question: Is Murray the point guard New Orleans needs? Two things happened last year: One, the Pelicans were a mess, and two, the Pelicans went most of the season without a true point guard in their rotation. With apologies to Jose Alvarado, who was traded in February, and rookie speedster Jeremiah Fears, New Orleans didn’t really have someone who could organize its offense and set up guys like Zion Williamson and Trey Murphy III. Things changed a bit shortly after the All-Star break, when Murray returned from an Achilles injury. It’s a small sample size of games that weren’t very competitive, but the 30-year-old shot the crap out of the ball in some highly efficient lineups. For example, in 282 minutes that Murray played alongside Zion, New Orleans’s offensive rating was 7.5 points above league average. Is any of that real? The answer will ultimately decide how much better the Pelicans can be this season.
