Analysis

By Justin Verrier

Lockdown defender whose shooting needs to keep pace with the rest of his improving offense.

Preseason question: Can he make 3s? Will he shoot 3s? What happened to him shooting 3s? Daniels is one of the best defenders in the game, with surgical swipes that generate bunches of turnovers. But his shooting remains a problem, even as the rest of his offensive game improves. Quin Snyder gave Daniels the green light two seasons ago to build up his confidence, but he reverted big time last year, taking more than three 3s just five times over 76 appearances. So while his overall offensive impact puts him among the Hawks’ best players, thanks to an assist rate that climbs by the year and a high success rate at the rim, his shooting will need to become at least passable to ensure he sticks on the court in crunch time, especially if Atlanta makes it deeper in the playoffs.
