The Takeaway
The Player
Hutchins is an undersized, high-motor edge defender whose game is built on quickness, flexibility, and refined hand usage. An ascending player with strong intangibles, he wins with technique and effort more than raw athletic measurables, which creates some tension between his tape and his testing profile.
As a pass rusher, Hutchins shows a polished and active approach. His sudden hands, ability to string moves together (swipe, slap, dip-and-rip), and improved coordination between upper and lower body stand out. He consistently works to keep blockers off his frame and uses his flexibility to bend and corner effectively, particularly on outside-in rushes. While his pass rush win rate and testing numbers are underwhelming for the position, his tape reflects a player who can generate pressure through skill, timing, and persistence rather than pure explosiveness.
Against the run, Hutchins is undersized and can be overpowered or sealed when tackles get into his frame. However, his 2025 tape showed clear improvement—he played with better discipline, finishing ability, and tackling consistency. His effort and pursuit help him outperform his size limitations, and he can make plays when kept clean.
Athletically, he’s more quick and flexible than he is fast or explosive. His testing didn’t match the visual quickness on tape, which may cause hesitation for analytically driven teams. Still, his bend, agility, and play style translate better in pads than in shorts.
His motor is a defining trait—relentless, competitive, and consistent snap to snap. He also offers some limited versatility with occasional drops into coverage, showing baseline awareness and ball skills.
The Draft
Hutchins is one of our favorite day-three prospects. He didn’t run as well as most scouts expected at the combine or his pro day, which will affect his draft slot. But he’s a sudden, athletic, and versatile sub-package edge whose motor is always revving and whose best ball is still in front of him. Expect to hear his name called in the fourth or fifth round.
The Projection
Hutchins projects as a rotational, sub-package edge with upside to outperform his draft slot. His technique, effort, and flexibility give him a path to carving out a pass rush role, but his size and average testing cap his ceiling as an every-down player. He’s best suited for a 3-4 scheme that features undersized but sudden, attacking edges (Broncos, Eagles, Falcons, or even Steelers). But in a base 4-3 front, he would simply serve as a sub-package DPR. He has some shades of Samson Ebukam (Falcons), Azeez Ojulari (Falcons), and Que Robinson (Broncos), three undersized edge defenders who entered the league with intriguing traits and as ascending talents but were far from finished products out of college.
